If I Were a Woman Living In...
What was it like to live as a woman in
another time? What were their joys and
their hardships? If I had wanted to be an
artist in earlier time would it had been
possible?
If I Were a Woman Living In…1839, 1851,
1863, 1888, 1907, 1938 are a series of self-
portrait mixed media photographs that tries
to answer these questions. I began creating
these images to bring together my interests
in feminism, early forms of photography,
costume design, social change and the use
of traditional materials like wax and pastel
with modern mediums like digital
collage/layering and photography. I used
myself as my model (these are all self-
portraits) to try to put myself, with some
small degree, into the shoes of the women
who came before me. It is a time line of
different women from different times and
different medium’s from different times.
